Claire DiVizio
writer & composer
Claire's writing career began at age 17, when they were named a National Gold Award Winner in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for science-fiction. Claire went on to pursue a dual degree in English at the University of Michigan along with their Vocal Music degree, where they completed a self-structured concentration in creative writing. In recent years, Claire has increasingly focused their output on poetry and libretto writing. They currently have a chapbook in development and are working on librettos for three different dramatic works.
In the last three years, Claire has developed a fruitful artistic relationship with composer Jasmine Thomasian, who has set several of their texts. So far, the pair has written four complete works: two art songs, an experimental sound-theatre piece, and a one-act comedic Halloween opera, which was co-composed between Claire and Jasmine. The pair have two more in development (an opera and a song cycle). Their opera in development was a finalist for the 2021 MassOpera New Opera Workshop, their short opera, Requiem For Five, was premiered by Chicago Opera On Tap in October, 2021, and the pair's comic art song, "In the Green Room," was featured in Chicago's SongSlam, hosted by Jake Heggie.
At the top right is "Electric," and at the bottom right is "In the Green Room," both art songs by Jasmine Thomasian, written on original poems by Claire.
